PG&E

A durable foundation for utility regulatory analysis

Challenge

An analytical department relied on ad hoc processes to answer changing questions about customers, billing, usage, rates, programs, premises, and demographic characteristics. Results were difficult to reproduce as operational data changed.

Work

Designed a monthly snapshot architecture covering approximately 5.5 million customers. It preserved the historical state of key customer and usage data and created reusable reference structures for an eight-person analytical department.

Hourly planning

Related interval-data tools imputed missing electricity and gas usage and reconciled results to billed meter reads, making hourly planning available across all 8,760 hours of a standard year.

Result

The architecture replaced the ad hoc process and made analysis easier, faster, more accurate, and reproducible. It became a central departmental foundation and has remained in use for more than 11 years.

System migration

Created a UNIX-based process that moved thousands of SAS programs across development, test, and production environments. Development and testing took approximately two weeks instead of the anticipated months.

Independent review

Found that an existing CARE/FERA measure combined percentages based on different customer populations. The logic was corrected and a materially inaccurate reported result was changed.

Southern California Edison

A controlled platform for 20-year load forecasts

Challenge

Long-term electricity-load forecasting depended on a manual spreadsheet process that was difficult to control, reproduce, and maintain.

Work

Built a web-based forecasting platform using SAS Stored Processes. It preserved the forecasters’ established analytical knowledge while moving the calculations into a controlled system.

Model inputs

The platform incorporated economic, demographic, price, climate, electric-vehicle, major-industry, and major-use assumptions.

Result

The platform improved the speed, reproducibility, transparency, and defensibility of 20-year load forecasts used in rate cases, resource planning, generation investment, and generation-contract decisions.

LeasePlan USA

Forecasting financial risk at the end of a lease

Challenge

A move from open-end to closed-end leases required more precise forecasts of what vehicles would be worth when they returned from lease.

Work

Developed production forecasting models using millions of auction transactions, including vehicle, age, mileage, condition, location, season, market, purchasing, and economic variables.

Result

The models supported contract pricing, residual-value risk, lease terms, portfolio valuation, fraud review, planning, and evaluation of remarketing outcomes.

FirstUSA/Chase

Partnership portfolio reporting

Built nightly reporting and intranet dashboards covering approximately 60 million cardholders and hundreds of partnership programs. The tools gave Partnership Marketing managers recurring access to acquisition, spending, profitability, marketing, and portfolio information without requiring new programming for every question.

University of Pennsylvania

Healthcare infrastructure

Conducted economic-impact analysis for a proposed proton-therapy facility. The work examined economic, employment, fiscal, and public benefits and directly supported an effort that secured a $5 million Pennsylvania grant.

Beacon Economics

241 Completion Project

Contributed economic-impact and benefit analysis to a Beacon Economics-led evaluation of the proposed 241 Toll Road completion project. The work considered construction activity, employment, travel-time savings, fuel savings, congestion, taxable sales, building activity, and local economic growth.

DirecTV

Customer-retention analysis

Analyzed credits, discounts, and other retention offers presented to existing customers, with attention to customer revenue and acceptance of new two-year commitments.

Economic consulting

Employment-discrimination analytics

Conducted statistical analysis involving hiring, firing, promotion, and eligible-worker populations in class-action employment matters. Developed custom C++ software to preserve a specialized multi-pool statistical method after the corresponding SAS procedure was discontinued.

Litton v. Honeywell

Intellectual-property damages

Contributed to actual-profit and “but-for” profit analysis. Reviewed calculations, tested assumptions, identified errors, and supported the development of defensible damages analysis.
